Press release: Fraud at parking ticket machines – KWL warns of fake QR codes

The problem has existed in other German cities for some time – and now, unfortunately, also in Lübeck: QR codes in public spaces are increasingly being covered with fake codes that lead to fraudulent websites designed to steal sensitive data, especially bank account information.

The problem has existed in other German cities for some time – and now, unfortunately, also in Lübeck: QR codes in public spaces are increasingly being covered with fake codes that lead to fraudulent websites designed to steal sensitive data, especially bank account information. This so-called quishing ("phishing" via QR codes) has now been reported more frequently on parking ticket machines throughout the city. The affected QR codes primarily link to websites of service providers for "Handyparken".

KWL therefore advises users to visit the official provider websites directly or download apps via app stores instead of accessing these apps and services via QR codes.

The parking machines in the city are regularly checked by KWL, and any fake QR codes are removed immediately. However, due to the high number of machines, KWL is asking all parkers to remain especially vigilant. The fraud attempts have been reported to the authorities.
